The county seat of Hart County, Hartwell, GA, was named after Revolutionary War figure Nancy Morgan Hart in 1856. With strong ties to both Georgia and South Carolina, our community was primarily focused on raising cotton until its decline after World War II and on the building of Hartwell Dam on the Savannah River, which created Lake Hartwell.
Recreation in our community is strongly connected to Lake Hartwell, which includes various water-related activities at Hartwell Lakeside Park, Long Point Recreation Area, Elrod Ferry Recreation Area, Big Oaks Recreation Area, and Georgia River Recreation Area and Fishing Pier on the South Carolina border.
